Biography

Nicole is a lecturer and paintings conservator with the Centre, and in 2008 submitted her PhD on The Behaviour of Western Artist's Materials in Tropical Environments as part of an ARC Linkage Project with the National Art Gallery in Malaysia, the Heritage Conservation Centre in Singapore, the National Gallery in Bangkok and the Vargas Museum at the University of the Philippines. Her research has focused on the canvas paintings in tropical climates where she has examined two hundred paintings from the partner collections to identify their materials and techniques and deterioration mechanisms from the 1900- 1950s. The same works were further monitored with Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (ESPI) in situ to determine the impact of hot, humid climates on the dimensional change of canvas paintings with the support of an Australia Endeavour Cheung Kong Award. Nicole has an interest in the transfer of artistic practices in terms of their materials and practices and the non destructive analysis of artworks using optical techniques.

With a general interest in materials conservation in Asia, Nicole has delivered a number of training workshops, research projects and diplomatic assignments in seven Southeast Asian countries. Previous research includes an analytical and archival study of five nineteenth century panel paintings from the Philippines in the Bohol School of Painting with the Diocese of Tagbilaran Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church.
