The Centre for Cultural Materials Conservation (CCMC) had the pleasure of welcoming the Honourable Minister Datuk Seri Utama, Dr Rais Yatim and a delegation from his Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage on Thursday, 3 May. Datuk Seri Utama and his delegation visited the off site treatment facilities of CCMC based at the Public Records Office of Victoria in North Melbourne. Treatments in progress included objects and works on paper from the RAAF Museum, sporting memorabilia (textiles and objects) from the Melbourne Cricket Club, and a painting on cardboard that requires the joint expertise of paintings and paper conservators.

Since 1996, Malaysia’s Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage has been one of CCMC’s most important partners. In 1996, Associate Professor Robyn Sloggett co-presented a conservation workshop in collaboration with the Malaysia Institute of Art and Design and the Department of Museums and Antiquities at Balai Seni Lukis Negara (National Art Gallery of Malaysia) and Muzium Negara. Over recent years CCMC has partnered Balai Seni Lukis Negara in an ARC Linkage project examining canvas paintings and their behaviour in tropical climates. This project also involved national institutions in Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines.

In 2004 CCMC welcomed staff from Balai Seni Lukis Negara and the Director of Muzium Negara to Melbourne as part of a Getty Conservation Institute/University of Melbourne conservation meeting. The CCMC also has a strong relationship with Muzium Kesenian Islam, and loaned a collection of Middle Eastern Manuscripts from the University in 2003. CCMC looks forward to ongoing collaboration with the conservation departments under the Ministry of Culture, Arts and Heritage in Malaysia.
