Arthur Streetson's Sydney Harbour at Cromourne (Ewing Collection, University of Melbourne) is a painting which has undergone much analysis. With the use of infra-red analysis we were to learn that Streeton used lead pencil to begin his work. The pencil was used to very minimally map out areas of the picture, such as bush areas in the cliffs (see below). This use of underdrawing proved interesting in two ways. Firstly, Impressionist artists were known not to do primary sketching, and secondly, it gives us a a point of reference for matching up with other works by Streeton.
