Housing and storing solutions for four book of hours bi-folios

The four vellum bi-folios in this treatment project were produced in Paris in 1408 and are held at the University of Melbourne’s Baillieu Library. They were required to be viewed horizontally on both sides and to stand vertically for exhibition. A new housing system was developed consisting of custom-made UV-filtering acrylic enclosures within which the bi-folios were thread mounted to double-sided unbuffered window mounts. The new housing method adapted established techniques to develop solutions suited to the specific needs of this project. Channels to allow air exchange were incorporated into the mounts, which were then secured within the acrylic enclosures. The bi-folios can now be accessed safely, displayed in an upright position and stored vertically in a purpose-built slipcase.
