The Objects conservators have extensive and diverse conservation work experience in laboratories and in situ working environments, especially ethnographic and archaeological material. They are excellent problem solvers with an encyclopedic knowledge of materials, they are trained in chemistry, applied science and archaeology.
The Objects Department conserves all three-dimensional objects (which can’t be categorised as paintings, paper or textiles), including archaeological, ethnographic, three-dimensional works of art such as sculptures and installation pieces, trophies, collectables and keepsakes, sporting memorabilia and paraphernalia, and social history items.

The conservation treatments undertaken by the objects lab vary depending on the needs of the object in consultation with the requirements of the client. These treatments include but are not limited to:
- Condition reporting and documentation
- Aqueous and non-aqueous surface cleaning
- Adhesion and consolidation of brakes
- Reshaping of objects (relaxing and humidification)
- Infill or replacement of missing pieces
- Inpainting losses
